The Disney Look, Mixed media
According to a 1977 handbook, the “cast members” at Disneyland are “devoted to giving happiness” which required, among other things, a certain appearance policy. Jermolaewa’s The Disney Look deals with a curious aspect of the idyllic world of Walt Disney: the allegedly pedantic entertainment pioneer, who himself wore a rigorously trimmed moustache, forbade his amusement park employees to wear facial hair. This insistence on immaculate appearance also involved bans on certain types of clothing and behavior, which the company has been slow to relax. Moustaches and beards have been permitted since 2012, though only to a precisely defined length. Anna Jermolaewa spoke with some of these workers about Disneyland’s strict grooming standards.

An der Wand unter der Galerie hängt der Werkkomplex Disney-Look mit einem Video, Texten der 1970er-Jahre und einem dem Bart von Walt Disney nachempfundener Neonbart als Objekt. Diese Arbeiten reflektieren in humorvoller Weise den sogenannten Disney-Look, strenge Verbote für Mitarbeiter für Kleidung, Rauchen, Essen, Kosmetik, aber vor allem für die Gesichtsbehaarung. Als 1955 Disneyland eröffnet wurde, untersagte Walt Disney, selbst Bartträger, den Angestellten Bart zu tragen, um einen adretten und professionellen Eindruck zu erreichen. 2000 folgte die Sensation: Schnauzer wurden enttabuisiert, Oberlippenbärte erlaubt. Seit 2012 dürfen männliche Angestellte Bärte tragen, die nicht über 13 Millimeter hinausgehen, auch wenn die Auflagen noch immer nicht ganz verschwunden sind. Jermolaewa hat mit etlichen Angestellten verschiedener Generationen über diese Zwangsverordnung und ihr Verhältnis dazu gesprochen und daraus einen Film gedreht, der dieses Verbot ironisiert und gleichzeitig als Eingriff in die persönliche Freiheit kritisiert.
